Women's watches are the very latest must have fashion item. No outfit will be complete without a watch. In fact, nowadays a wristwatch is considered as much of a status symbol as a device to tell the time of day, it is really that cool.
Although it may be tempting to think that smart phones and other technological devices have now made the wristwatches redundant. This is far from reality. Women's watches, in particular, have become fine tuned to the modern era and are now firmly set as items of smooth, smart modern culture.
As a piece of pure functionality, they may have had their day a little but certainly not as a timeless piece of what looks good, catches the light and is irreplaceable, whatever the time of day. If anything women's watches are more of a prized item today than ever before.
This is borne out by the fact that most of today's most elegant and successful ladies will all adorn beautiful watches, whether in the boardroom or on the catwalk. Strangely, even though watches are now less used for telling the time, and more as fashion items, less than 100 years ago, this was not the case. No self respecting gent would wear a wristwatch because back then, it was the pocket watch that was symbolic of whether you were a real gentleman or not. Some men were quotes a saying they would rather wear a skirt than a common wristwatch. The women, on the other hand wore wristlets. Unlike today's high quality women's watches, these were considered more superficial than as a serious timepiece. It was not seriously considered whether a wristlet could achieve the correct level of time keeping accuracy or be robust enough to last.
For this reason, not many companies produced them in quantity. Those that did manufacture them produced a small ladies model, with delicate fixed wire or chain-link bracelets.
By the nineteenth century, however, times began to change. Conflicts and wars meant soldiers saw the wristwatch as being more practical than a clumsy pocket watch, awkward when in combat or battle.
As the decades wore on, more technological advances developed and victories at war took effect in more favour and advancement with the simple wristwatch. This was particularly so during the Boer War when success was achieved by the British officers by using makeshift wristwatches to coordinate troop movements, and synchronize attacks against the enemy formations.
