Embrace Your Softer Side

Author: Kathryn Pattison
Do you have a softer side hiding a hard edge beneath? If so, think about adding any number of the great suede jackets out there right now to your collection.

Suede is a classy material few understand. The name is actually a derivative of the French word for Swedish, Suède for all those polyglots out there, so no wonder it has remained a timeless material in the world of fashion. The material is actually created from the underside of an animals skin, usually it is made from the skin of a lamb. This fact alone explains its softness. Other animals skins are also used to make suede, but for several biological reasons, their suedes are often a bit shaggier than those made from lamb. One down side of the material is that it is less durable than standard leather. However, there is a wonderful positive of this material that you will absolutely adore: it is so, incredibly soft! Not only that, it is also durable. These are just two of the many reasons why upholsters, designers, and glove makers have been using suede for decades to create warm, comfortable pieces appropriate for many different occasions and wardrobe pieces.
And that includes vaunted suede jackets. Typically, suede has a lower key look than straight leather, and can soften your wardrobe. It also carries less of the leather look, which means you wont set the tone right away, but will instead make a smoother, subtler impression. Choose the fabric that suits you! If you go with suede, think about pairing your piece with jeans and a simple t-shirt.
But do not think that suede jackets are overly casual just because they are comfortable and make less of an obvious statement. Increasingly, designers have embraced the materials durability and flexibility and are creating draped, cropped, and more fitted pieces that we know you will love. Even more, suede gives off that velvety look that is much more fitting of exotic colours than your typical leather.
Also check out washable suedes, as these will add convenience to your wardrobe. High end products are hardly ever washable, but thanks to several advancements in the fashion world, suedes have become easier to wash than ever. Check with your retailer before taking the plunge with your piece into the washing machine, but do not think that buying a nice piece will put you in the red… that is, unless its dyed that colour!
