Signature Perfume: Selecting the Right One for You

Author: Remy Baker
In the animal kingdom, each species has its own unique scent. This allows them to choose a mate, avoid getting lost and even mark their territory. The same can be said with human beings, particularly women. It is not unusual for you to want to be associated with a particular scent considering scents can evoke feelings and even trigger memories. A good way to do this is to have your own signature perfume.

A signature perfume can help a person leave a mark or make an impression. A particular scent can be so associated with a person that other people would know they've entered a room without actually seeing them. Of course, if you're going to go to the trouble of wading through the minefield of brand name perfumes to select a special one that makes a statement, you would want it to be a fragrance that you really like rather than one you just tolerate. Following are a few other points you should consider.

Perfume Concentration

On the onset, you need to determine what concentration will suit your lifestyle, light, medium or heavy. Keep in mind that perfumes come with different percentage of essence oils. The less diluted they are, the stronger their scent is. Make sure that your choice is based on your lifestyle. For instance, if you're the sporty and outdoorsy type, fresh and clean smelling scents should suit you just fine.

Type of Scent
It would be easy enough to fall into a trap especially with the way famous perfumes are being marketed. Celebrity fragrances are so aggressively marketed that you could end up buying a perfume you don't really because you got suckered in by the advertisement. Consider the following perfume groups to see if they can help your make the right choice.
- Floral scents: perfect for individuals who are romantic and feminine
- Oriental scents: for someone who want to come off as sexy and mysterious
- Oceanic scents: fit individuals who want to evoke fresh smells of the ocean
- Woodsy scents: for casual, earthy and energetic personalities
- Fruity scents: perfect for those who are sweet and bubbly
Reaction with Your Body
Even after knowing what kind of perfume you want, in terms of concentration and scent, you still need to do a dry run to see how the fragrance works with your body chemistry. As soon as you apply the perfume, the first aroma to hit you is the top note. This usually evaporates within 10 minutes on average. This is followed by the heart note which gradually emerges; it lingers on for about 2 hour in eau de parfum before the final scent called the base note unfolds.
This base note is the part that lingers the longest on then skin. Although it's the last stage of a perfume, in well made perfumes, you should still be able to discern the top and heart notes right through to the end. All the fragrant notes should interact with the body's own chemistry in a harmonious reaction.
So if you desire to have your very own a signature perfume, it's worth taking your time to choose from the large selection of fragrances out there. If you can, get some free sample to test drive initially and if the perfume smells right on you and fits your lifestyle and personality, you're unto a winner.
