Its estimated that 75% of adult women in the US alone color their hair at some point in their life and most of them do so on a regular basis and an increasing number of men are discovering the allure of changing their look by changing their hair color as well. If you have never colored your hair before though and are thinking of taking the plunge then you probably have questions about doing so. Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about hair color:
What is the real difference between semi permanent and permanent hair color?
If you are coloring your hair for the first time and intend to use a home kit to do so you will have seen coloring kits labeled both "semi permanent" and permanent" in the stores. Semi permanent colors use ingredients that simply coat the hair with a color and that color washes out in about four to six weeks. These are great if you are looking to add tones and highlights to your natural color but the one thing they cannot do is lighten your hair significantly.
Permanent colors actually alter the structure of your hair to color it and they do not wash out, they have to grow out. This method allows you to really change the color of your hair - even those with very black hair can go Marilyn Monroe blonde - but permanent hair color will damage your hair and short of having all the color cut out you will have to recolor every six weeks or so to cover the "roots" as they grow in.
What is Demi Permanent Color?
Colors that are marked "demi permanent" are for those looking for a very short term change as they are only designed to last through 10-20 shampoos. They will only add subtle color but they can be a great choice for those who are looking for a bit of a change but do not want to permanently alter the structure of their hair.
Does the type of hair you have affect the way a hair color will work?
Your hair texture (thick, fine, coarse) certainly can make a difference to the way a certain color "turns out" and it is actually very rare that you will get the exact same color as the model on the box has anyway. That is why it is important to complete the recommended test before you color. That will let you see what color your hair will actually turn and let you determine how long the color needs to be left on to achieve your desired result. Usually fine hair will absorb color far faster than thicker, coarser hair though and color will not need to be left on as long.
I Hate my Hair Color! Can I Fix it?
There are times when a hair color change just does not end up the way you wanted. If you have colored at home then there are kits you can buy to "strip" hair color but you best bet if you truly want your old color back is to pay a visit to your local hair salon and let a professional fix the damage.
