The oracle has spoken or is about to speak! I am referring to the FDA when it is going to pronounce on one of the most popular facial products for women. This is the chemical peel which is so popular nowadays and the use of the alpha hydroxyl acids (AHA) has become commonplace. But there are risks, apparently, and that is why the FDA verdict is awaited with such interest.
In the meantime, we would do well to heed what The Cancer Prevention Coalition has to say about chemical peels in general. According to them, they happen to be in the top ten most risky skincare treatments to-day!
Now, apart from that risk, there are other dangers too. The most popular acids are glycolic acid, salicylic acid, resorcinol and trichloracetic acid. All these can be effective but there are risks of scarring, uneven tone and discolouring which are extremely upsetting when they happen.
There is the possibility of getting more sun damage after a peel due to the extra sensitivity of the new layer of skin. In fact, one dermatologist says that he would never do a peel for anyone on the European continent in the summer months. That summer can be quite long so it practically lasts about six months if you live in the southern Mediterranean, for example.
Another dermatologist has said that he would never do an AHA peel for anyone in Australia as the sun exposure there is both intense in nature and lasts for most of the year. The risk is even greater when we consider the hole in the ozone layer which is at a crucial point in the southern hemisphere.
But facial products for women have also had a very bad press as regards certain chemicals which are used in about 90% of the personal skin care offerings on the market to-day.
There is an intense campaign going on at the moment. On the one hand, we have the mainstream companies who are backed up by some important dermatological associations who claim that all the chemicals and synthetics used are well within the safety limits.
The non profit organisations are fighting a battle with them saying that there are far too many risks associated with the present ingredients and the whole industry needs a makeover.
There are enormous economic interests at stake here. If you want to play safe, why not opt for natural facial products for women by first checking what side of the fence your favourite cosmaceutical company is on. This group will only allow companies to use their logo, provided they have phased out all harmful chemicals or are well on the way to doing so.
It is high time that facial products for women became safer as we are fed up of hearing about parabens being found in breast cancer tissue and so on. It is time consumers woke up and I hope this article will help in some way.
