Our simple cracked hands tips will help repair troublesome scaling, flaking and itchiness. Read on and follow them to prevent cracked hands from coming back.
Moisturize. Lotions and creams won't de-age your skin (even the deep-penetrating types), but they will temporarily restore softness, giving hands a more youthful appearance. For skin that's normal to dry (and most hand skin is, even if your face is oily), try a formula that contain glycerin, which absorbs and retains moisture, and are available at drugstores and beauty counters near you. For severely cracked hands, slather on shea butter, hand balm, or a thick face cream, and be sure to rub it into your cuticles. Any of these products will form a water-resistant barrier that prevents moisture from evaporating and helps heal cracked skin of hands. Several nonsticky, readily absorbed formulations are conveniently made available at any beauty and drug stores. It is suggested to apply it in the morning, night, and after every hand washing for it to become more effective.
Block Harmful Rays. Protection from UVA/UVB rays is the most effective way to prevent new brown spots and mottling, as well as to slow collagen loss. Before going outside, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (minimum SPF 30) or sunblock to the tops of the hands and the forearms, areas that get more exposure than palms. And then reapply generously (a dime-size dab per hand) and often--at least every 30 minutes when active or every 2 hours when exposed to incidental sunlight. Choose a nonslippery formula with extra staying protecting power.
Apply anti-agers. To even out mottled skin, improve texture, and stimulate the growth of collagen destroyed by cracked skin, apply a prescription retinoid cream immediately after washing your hands. Yes, it is expensive, but generally, retinoid is more effective than over-the-counter brands. If you're using this as a preventive measure, apply once daily and then follow with a deep penetrating hand lotion before going to bed. If you're trying to repair cracked hands, you may need it in the morning, too. Follow up with a sunscreen and apply hand lotion on top.
Glove it. At night, generously apply vaseline to your hands where the cracks and sores are and then put a cotton-lined gloves on. The gloves will ensure the vaseline stays put. Even just one overnight session will go a long way towards healing your hands, and a few days together will put things totally right again.
