The original wellington boot was popularised by the first Duke of Wellington, who asked his shoe maker to modify his Hessian boots to make them a bit more fitting. The first rubber wellington boots created in 1853 were an instant success with farmers, preventing their feet and trousers from getting wet and muddy.
