If you are like me you both love and hate buying gifts. I love the prospect of finding a perfect little present for a friend, but I hate the effort of trolling through the fluff, and overly marketed space filler. So to simplify the process for all the other gift hunters out there here are the top two gifts for 2012. The criteria for choosing the top two gifts of 2012 included, individuality, memorability and simplicity. I was not looking for items that costed a bundle, but offered no bang. All of these gifts are also practical, sorry I have no room for novelties, I would not even extend my list out to three gifts.
1- Moleskine Diaries
Do you have arty friends? Do you go out with your friends for coffees, and then start doodling on the napkins? Well this is the ideal gift for you, and your friends? Moleskine Diaries have been used by some of the greatest artist in history. They are a simple design, but for some reason they are just inspiring. All of the items in the Moleskine range have a certain elegance, without screaming for attention. The design beckons creation. When you open up a Moleskine, you do not doodle, instead you design. Inspiration just comes. It may sound like a bunch of faff, but it is true. Maybe it is some kind of magical dust that is sprinkled on the elastic shutter. Or maybe the leather is sourced from cows that are eating some special kind of grass. I can't put my finger on it, but when I put my fingers on one, I just know.
So for any design students, marketers, singer songwriters, simply for anybody artistic, or dreams of being so, then the Moleskine diaries are the go. Also if you have any friends that you know are always late, giving them a diary is a not so subtle way of telling them, "sort yourself out".
2- Slip Pillowslips
A pillow slip. Why would I want to buy someone a pillowslip? Before you write moe off as some wacko hear me out.
What is the last thing that you see of before you go to sleep, and the first thing you thing you see when you wake up? Well it all depends on wether you sleep on you belly or on your back. It is either going to be the ceiling, or your pillow. I am not going to recommend that you get a new ceiling for friends, but a pillow on the other hand, there is a possibility.
These slip pillowslips are made of natural silk, a material that is gentle on the skin and will not irritate. Cotton pillowslips are made of cotton, which also is a natural fabric that is low irritant, but it has one weakness. When you rest your head on a cotton pillowslip, it will not slip against your face, which will result in classic pillow marks along the side of your face. This tugging and pulling on the upper layers of your skin can create loose skin, and will cause wrinkles. A silk pillow slip on the other hand will slide with your skin, thereby not pulling and creating baggy wrinkles.
So how do you decide which of these two presents to decide of for your friends? Well here is a simple question to ask yourself.
Does your friend more time in front of a mirror, or a window?
If your friend is vain and spends more time in the mirror, then the wrinkle hating slip pillowslip is the go. If your friend spends more time at a window, seemingly looking for inspiration, and enjoying the world, then the Moleskine diary is the perfect gift.
Of course if you want to test out these gifts for yourself before you buy some for your friends, then you can do what I did and purchase for yourself before you buy for your friends. Hope you enjoyed this, and I am looking for the top designer gifts for 2013 already.
