How to Throw an Afternoon Tea Party this Summer

Author: Lyn O'Camp
It's the middle part of the summer season, and your daughter has done everything she could think of like going to the beach, slumber parties, going to the amusement park, etc. Now she's home and bored out her mind. What to do next? Why not plan an afternoon tea party for her and a couple of her closest friends? I am pretty sure you'll both have fun planning it. I am sure the other mothers will be grateful that they can reuse the flower girl dresses they have in their daughter's closet.

Here are some tips to help you and your daughter get started:
  • The Theme – before you do anything else, discuss with your daughter what theme she would like to have for her afternoon tea party. It could be a color theme, a princess theme, or any theme your little girl can imagine. I remember my daughter went to an afternoon tea party with a doll type of theme where they were ask to bring their favorite doll with them. So we dressed up her favorite doll, my daughter chose a matching dress from her collection of used flower girl dresses and we went to the party.
  • The Date – Now it's time for you to decide on the date of the party. Because it's summer and they are on a summer break, week days will be a good idea to hold the party, but of course if she prefers it on a weekend, then so be it. It's her party.
  • The Place – once you've decided on the theme, now it's time to choose the location of the party. Any place in your home, the living room, the dining room, the backyard or even her room (that's if you invite only 2 or 3 of her friends), will do. Once you've decided where, decorate it with a some flowers and ribbons, you don't need to go overboard.
  • The Weather - Take into consideration the weather for time of the party. Check online the 5 day forecast so at least you have an idea if the party should be indoors or outdoors. It might be better to have a back up plan if ever the weather won't agree with you.
  • The Invitation – keep it simple. I prefer to send out small, hand written invites that my daughter has written. It's makes personal and more meaningful. You can find nice invitation cards at your local bookstore. But if your daughter prefers, she can send her friends an online invitation. When inviting, don't forget to mention the attire and remember, for outdoors afternoon tea parties, specify that they should wear something light. You don't want her friends getting hot and sticky. Not a pretty sight.
  • The Menu – choose light snacks that won't spoil easily, more important if you choose an out door venue. Cracker, cookies, scones, biscuits and natural fruit juice is a great menu for kids. Just choose snacks with less sugar than usual. You wouldn't want children on a sugar rush running around the place. Also, choose snack that aren't messy or gooey, you would want them to get stains all over their pretty girls party dresses.
  • The Ambiance – Let your daughter choose the music, games and activities that she wants for the party. Suggest light children's music and help her out by going online and choosing the activities and games she wants. You can find a lot of ideas online.
Once everything is set and the party is on going, just sit back and watch your child have fun with her friends at her fabulous Summer Tea Party. Hey, don't forget to take pictures.
