Creams for Wrinkles - A Look at Some of The Strangest Ingredients and Their Justification

Author: Kalpana Rajagopalan
None of us want to be covered in wrinkles, and as a result, we spend a small fortune on creams for wrinkles every year. While this is perfectly understandable, I can't help but notice that skin care manufacturers are increasingly willing to try anything in a bid to boost their profits. These days, it seems the more "weird" a product is, the more manufacturers can charge for it. Does this mean these strange products really do deliver exceptional results, or is this all just another elaborate marketing ploy? In my opinion, it's the latter. Nonetheless, we'll go ahead and take a look at some of the strangest ingredients found in some of today's skin care products, and then you can decide for yourself whether you want to use these creams on your face.

Creams for wrinkles, as with all skin care products, have changed dramatically over the years, but when you read the paragraphs which are about to follow, I'm sure many of you will agree that some anti wrinkle treatments are just downright ridiculous.

Snail Secretions

Most people who have done a little gardening in their lives have come face to face with snails. In fact, for many gardeners, snails are public enemy number one since they can wreak havoc with one's vegetable patch. If you've encountered snails, you'll also be familiar with that disgusting slime they constantly secrete, and I'm sure most gardeners wouldn't dream of rubbing that goo on their faces. Well, as much as it may shock you, a number of brand name manufacturers add this goo into their anti aging creams. One brand in particular, which I won't name here, is crammed full of it, and with a price tag exceeding $130, it's not cheap either.

Human and Animal Placenta

For those who don't already know, a placenta is the sack in which an unborn child or other mammal survives until the time of birth, at which point it is discarded, along with the umbilical cord. Now, I'm not saying a placenta, be it from a human or an animal, is disgusting. To the contrary, I think the creation of a new life is the most beautiful thing in the world, but should we really be using placentas for making anti aging skin care products? Manufacturers claim that because it's such a rich source of proteins and various hormones, it can be beneficial for reducing or removing wrinkles. I'll leave it to you, the reader, to decide.

Human Foreskin

A number of manufacturers use human foreskin in their anti wrinkle creams, but two companies in particular are renowned for doing so, although again, I'm not going to name them here. One of them even boasts that they have only used a single foreskin in the two decades that they've been making such creams, since a single foreskin can be used produce enough skin to cover an area equivalent to four football fields. Foreskin taken from a newborn baby is a rich source of dermal fibroblasts that produce collagen, and so the manufacturers argue that this can greatly benefit the skin in terms of reducing wrinkles. Strange I know, so only you can decide whether or not you want to use a cream that's been made, in part, from the foreskin of a baby.

Judging from my own personal experience, creams for wrinkles don't need to contain such controversial ingredients in order to make them effective, but as long as consumers are willing to pay over the top prices for such products, manufacturers will continue producing them.
